2015 5/26 Nepal Earthquakes

Karmapa KTD May 14, 2015

We wanted to take a moment to give you an update on the earthquake in Nepal. The situation continues to be dire. You may have heard that just today there was another magnitude 7.3 earthquake centered near Mt. Everest. Many of the small and remote villages that have been so badly hit by the earthquake are only now being contacted by rescue and aid efforts. Food and water continue to be scarce, and there is a tremendous shortage of the materials and manpower needed to provide shelter and care for those effected.”
We think that the priority at this point is to help the thousands of people in Nepal who have suffered so much loss and who are struggling at this very moment to find the basic necessities to survive.

Nepal earthquake: Dozens die in new tremor near Everest

May 12, 2015

A major earthquake has struck eastern Nepal, near Mount Everest, two weeks after more than 8,000 people died in a devastating quake.
At least 48 people have been killed and more than 1,000 injured, officials say. At least 17 have also died in India.
The latest earthquake hit near the town of Namche Bazaar and sent thousands of panicked residents on to the streets of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu.
It had a magnitude of 7.3, compared with the 7.8 of the 25 April quake.
The latest quake struck at 12:35 Nepali time (06:50 GMT) and was centred about 76km (47 miles) east of Kathmandu, in a rural area close to the Chinese border.
The quake was felt in northern India, Tibet and Bangladesh. India’s home ministry said 16 people had been killed in the state of Bihar, and one more in Uttar Pradesh. Officials in China said one person was confirmed dead in Tibet.
Krishna Gyawali, the chief district officer for Chautara, said there had been a number of landslides.
Landslides were also reported by Save the Children in Sindhupalchok and Dolakha. A spokeswoman told the BBC its staff had been “dodging huge rocks rolling off the hillside”.

Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam said: “Many houses have collapsed in Dolakha… there is a chance that the number of dead from the district will go up.”
The BBC’s Navin Singh Khadka says the new earthquake has brought down more houses and lodges in the Everest region but that local officials report very few tourists are still in the area following the 25 April quake.
A nurse in Namche Bazaar, Rhita Doma Sherpa, told Reuters: “The school building is cracked and bits of it, I can see, they have collapsed. It was lunchtime. All the kids were outside.”
The latest quake struck at a depth of 15km (9.3 miles), according to the US Geological Survey – the same depth as the April quake. Shallow tremors are more likely to cause greater damage at the surface.
Tuesday’s earthquake is likely to be one of the largest to hit Nepal, which has suffered hundreds of aftershocks since 25 April.

Langtang本是一個有四百多人口的美麗村落也是徒步登山的要塞之地。地震造成的山崩土石,幾乎淹沒了整個村子,房舍旅館幾乎都看不到,只有一棟房子倖存。

For the next several minutes, we felt like we were standing on a block of Styrofoam on a windy day in a choppy lake as the ground heaved back and forth.” Read Ken Isaacs, Vic President of Programs and Government Relations, first-hand account of the second earthquake to hit ‪#‎Nepal‬:http://bit.ly/1JcZjuu

Lapchi Snow Mountain is situated in the eastern part of Nepal on the border with Tibet, at a height of about 4850 meters. It is considered to be a very holy place that has been blessed by the presence of siddhas and masters like Mahasiddha Saraha, Padmasambhava and Milarepa who meditated in the caves of Lapchi. Lapchi is closely bound up with the history of the Drikung Kagyu. Kyobpa Jigten Sumgön had sent countless Vajrayana practitioners there and in the centuries that followed many outstanding masters from the Drikung lineage went to Lapchi to advance their practice. Many practitioners went on extended meditation retreats in one of the numerous sacred caves.
Main road that connects Lapchi to Nepal destroyed.
We have been notified by members of Lapchi association that almost all of the homes in Lapchi have been destroyed along with roads, bridges, monastery and retreat homes. A few of the people have also been injured and they were brought down to Kathmandu to be admitted in the hospital.

Since the roads were in bad condition, this photo was taken from helicopter showing homes destroyed.

The people residing in Lapchi are poor and live in simple homes made of stones and metal roofs. They lack the abundance of basic utilities like electricity, heat, hot water and gas for cooking that we take so for granted. With the recent earthquake the situation has only gotten worse. The simple homes that they lived in have been destroyed and they have been left homeless. Currently they are living in self-made shelters in nearby caves. Many have lost all animal live stocks like yak and cows that they greatly depend on.
Due to the recent rain and the roads being completely destroyed, the much needed aid has not reached them from the nearby cities. Somehow till now the villagers have managed to survive due to the fact they are used to living simple lives. But they are concerned about the future weather in the next few months starting August, when it will start to snow in Lapchi. They need to have their homes repaired before that.
