Cambodia has been burdened by a long history of conflict. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia’s Communist Party led by Pol Pot, seized power in the capital, Phnom Penh. Through theirextreme social engineering program, the Khmer Rouge would end up being responsible for an estimated 2 million deaths. Many intellectuals and ethnic minority groups were targeted and executed in mass killings, and much of Cambodia’s cultural heritage was destroyed during the Khmer Rouge regime. In 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime fell, but the negative impact of the Pol Pot years is still felt. Today, Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world and relies heavily on foreign aid to support its economy and its beggared people.
