SimplyHelp teams up with New Image Emergency Shelter for the Homeless

On February 23, SimplyHelp representatives visited the New Image Emergency Shelter for the Homeless in Downtown Los Angeles to distribute over 16,000 cans of juice. The generous donation was made possible by President Global Inc. The New Image Emergency Shelter for the Homeless provides overnight shelter, meals, shower facilities, and a comforting, supportive place for homeless men and women who seek a night’s refuge from the streets. We also met with staff and toured the facilities, and look forward to working with New Image on future collaborative projects.

SimplyHelp thanks you for your continued support! Be sure to “like” us on Facebook to receive updates on volunteer opportunities and events.

El Salvador Container Packing - Thanks to our volunteers!

On Sunday, February 13, over 50 volunteers arrived at the SimplyHelp Warehouse to help pack boxes of donated goods that will be sent to El Salvador.  The boxes of donated items included clothing, shoes, socks,  furniture, and medical supplies. Volunteers packed up the boxes and put them in a large storage container that will be sent to El Salvador, where the goods will be distributed at a center for the homeless elderly. A big thanks to all of our volunteers who came out and contributed to the event. You rock!

SimplyHelp China -- New Year Donation

Happy New Year!

Here at SimplyHelp, we hope that you have been enjoying the New Year celebrations with your family and friends. While it is necessary to enjoy the holiday, our families, and the traditions, it is also important to remember that there are still those in need who we can help together. It is a New Year, and for many people this means the hope of a fresh start.

An important cultural tradition associated with celebrating the New Year is showing respect for the elderly – a tradition that takes on even more importance when the elderly are unable to care for themselves. Since 2007, our friends at the SimplyHelp China Chapter in Szechuan Province in China have visited a local center for low-income seniors to pay their respects, celebrate the New Year, and donate needed items.  This year, the volunteers presented the seniors with the traditional red envelopes, as well as some daily necessities of toothpaste, toothbrushes, towels, and soap. Residents were also treated to another, tastier surprise –an entire roasted pig! Fang An, the President of SimplyHelp China, was responsible for organizing this particular donation event, and has been an incredible asset to SimplyHelp’s presence in China. He provided assistance in relief efforts after the devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Szechuan in 2008, and also provided support for the construction of libraries in the region.

We hope that the Year of the Rabbit brings you and your family prosperity, health, and happiness

Professional attire donation: Chicana Service Action Center, Downtown Los Angeles

On February 2, 2011, SimplyHelp Foundation representatives delivered donated professional attire to the Chicana Service Action Center in Downtown Los Angeles.  The delivery jumpstarted SimplyHelp’s new domestic campaign that focuses on assisting the unemployed re-enter the work force by providing necessary resources. Finding clothes appropriate for a job interview is crucial in the quest for employment, but is a difficult thing for many underprivileged men and women to attain. For this component of the project, SimplyHelp collected donations of professional attire for unemployed men and women to wear to job interviews. Donated items included ties, blazers, slacks, blouses, skirts, and dress shoes.

SimplyHelp met with Chicana Service Action Center President and C.E.O. Sophia Esparza and her assistant Aissa Cerda, and discussed plans for future collaboration between the two groups. Together, we contributed to helping aid the unemployed, and advanced efforts towards individual employment and empowerment.

Over the past 10 years, SimplyHelp’s interactions with homeless communities of Los Angeles have been extensive. We have previously collaborated on distribution projects with other organizations, such as the Foothill Unity Center, the Pilipino Charity Food Bank and the Midnight Mission. This year, after observing how the effects of the dismal economy have negatively impacted the lives of so many, we feel the need to reach out to those closer to home. At SimplyHelp, we are planning on expanding our domestic projects to include a Job Seeker Assistance Program that will empower unemployed men and women from low-income communities. Potential projects include initiating workshops that will give the unemployed homeless a chance to get back on their feet, and into the workforce. These might include topics like resume writing, tips for job hunting, money management skills, Microsoft Office usage, and job interview preparation. We also plan on assisting jobless single mothers by providing them with items like children’s clothing, toys and other childcare items to alleviate some economic pressure. Many of the recently unemployed homeless we have interacted with have been faced harshly with bad luck, and our goal is to provide resources that will help them turn their luck around.
